while i'm at it here's some other songs the boss did for movies. he won an oscar for "streets of philadelphia" from philadelphia and "secret garden" from jerry maguire is just plain awesome.
i love movie soundtracks. i wasn't so on top of them this year as in pervious years. i do want to discuss three of them; one score that i love, one soundtrack that i love and one soundtrack that is terrible but has one absolutely amazing song on it.
firstly, my love for hans zimmer knows no bounds. his score for frost/nixon is so beautiful.
the good soundtrack is tropic thunder. it is amazing and chock full of songs i've always loved, and some guilty pleasures too. it also has a few songs i've never heard before that are wonderful.
and now the soundtrack that is terrible: twilight. (we won't get into the movie itself. haha. i may have loved it but i'll never tellll). the soundtrack, which made bank, is filled with mediocre rock songs. actually, it's the kind of stuff i would have liked in high school (for shame) so i guess i can see how it made so much money. it does, however, have one shinning light, namely iron & wine.
i work all day today and then i fly to my parents' house for christmas tomorrow morning, so this might be my last chance to post some christmas music. i'm going to post a few favorites.
"it was sophia who never fully recovered. it was she who somehow knew you best. and like you she never forgot that one night where true loved seemed possible."
cameron crowe soundtracks are always boss. this one is particularly good, and his song choice for this moment makes it all the more heartwrenching.
i will be seeing asobi seksu at the rickshaw stop (for $11.25! score!) in a few weeks and oasis at the oakland arena in december. i think i might get tickets to see ben folds at the warfield and css at bimbo's too.
this isn't music related. but i figured i might as well post this anywhere i can. so here you go.
so my aunt linda was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. she beat it once. last year it came back. she's still fighting it. last fall my cousin christine, her daughter, was diagnosed. she's still fighting. last week they discovered that my cousin wendy has the gene. so she might get it as well. same with her daughter. and christine's two little girls. in fact, last week christine's 10 year old daughter samantha asked my uncle mike if one day she'll get breast cancer, since her mom and her grandma both have it. that nearly broke his heart.
my mom, my uncle and i are walking in the san francisco 60 mile, 3 day breast cancer walk in september. i have to raise $2000 in order to participate. aka i need to have that money raised or i can't walk. i've got about a month left. and i'm nowhere near my goal. so, i'm asking you guys. any help is better than no help. $5 even would be great.
so one of the many sad things about not having the time to post in so long is i didn't have a chance to write about the various concerts i've gone to recently. i saw rogue wave at the fillmore. SO GOOD. they brought out john vanderslice. i saw los campesinos! at bimbo's. those kids really know how to put on a show. i feel like it if they hosted a dance party it would be impossible *not* to have fun. most importantly i saw THE VERVE at the warfield. i waited ten years to see them. they were so good i really have no words.
first new post (one of many i hope). so a crop of my favorite artists (and one guilty pleasure) released new albums this summer. i thought death cab for cutie's narrow stairs was incredibly boring. i really hated just about all of my morning jacket's evil urges -- which is incredibly sad because i really love jim james. i just think they missed the mark with this one. and viva la vida or death and all his friends by coldplay (the guilty pleasure) was completely underwhelming. however, to make up for all of this -- and really it is SO GOOD that it *does* make up for all the crap -- came me› su› í eyrum vi› spilum endalaust from sigur rós. this album is so fucking great. i have very few words. i'm sharing track #2 with you because it is the stuff that dreams are made of. i love it.
wow. i've been m.i.a. for a loooooong time. sorry guys. i just graduated from berkeley and moved to san francisco. and don't have a very good internet connection right now. but a new post is coming. i swear!
so this dashboard confessional ep is SO CUTE. according to wiki:
The album is a concept album. It chronicles the protagonist as he longs after a girl in "For You To Notice." In the next track, "So Impossible", he asks her on a date. In "Remember to Breathe", a friend is helping him prepare for his date. Finally, "Hands Down" talks about what Carrabba routinely calls "the best day I ever had."
look at the album art:
SO CUTE.
i think i have like 6 different versions of hands down (including the one featuring michael stipe that i posted earloer).
I'm starting to fashion an idea in my head where I would impress you with every single word I said. Would come out insightful, or brave, or smooth, or charming and you'd want to call me.. And I would be there every time you'd need me I'd be there every time...
But for now I'll look so longingly waiting... For you to want me, for you to need me, for you to notice me

So she says "Everyone's going to the party, won't you come if I come with a friend for your friend? I'd be so pleased to see you out of the classroom wearing the smile that I'll bring you. I was hoping to learn a few things like.. Do you do you like dishing the dirt on the whole class or talking the big smack or playing the fool or wearing all of the latest fashions or bucking the new trends or wearing your old threads. or If you like coffee in the evening These are a few things that I'd like to know that I'd like to know"
So I say... "I've been scheduled to work but I'll call in and my friend isn't busy he'd be happy to join me and maybe my friend and your friend will hit it off or maybe we will?"
I'm dying to know do you do you like dreaming of things so impossible or only the practical or ever the wild or waiting through all your bad bad days just to end them with someone you care about or do you like making out and long drives and brown eyes and guys that just don't quite fit in yeah do you like them So yes, I'll see you there.
Breathe in for luck Breathe in so deep This air is blessed You share with me This night is wild So calm and dull These hearts, they race From self-control Your legs are smooth As they graze mine We're doing fine We're doing nothing at all
My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me So won't you kill me So I die happy My heart is yours to fill or burst To break or bury Or wear as jewelry Whichever you prefer
The words are hushed Let's not get busted Just lay entwined here Undiscovered Safe in here from all the stupid questions "Hey did you get some?" Man that is so dumb Stay quiet Stay near Stay close, they can't hear So we can get some
My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me So won't you kill me So I die happy My heart is yours to fill or burst To break or bury Or wear as jewelry Whichever you prefer
Hands down this is the best day I can ever remember I'll always remember the sound of the stereo The dim of the soft lights The scent of your hair That you twirled in your fingers And the time on the clock When we realized it's so late And this walk that we shared together And the streets were wet And the gate was locked So I jumped in And I let you in And you stood at your door With your hands on my waist And you kissed me like you meant it And I knew That you meant it That you meant it That you meant it And I knew That you meant it That you meant it
so lately i've been listening to basically nothing but blink-182. that's just what i'm in the mood for. my last.fm weekly chart for last week was insane. so i thought i would spread this madness to here. so i think my favorite of all their albums is their very last one. self-titled or untitled? i'm perfectly fine leaving that question unanswered. this album makes me really sad because clearly their sound was evolving from pop-punk, a sound which in my opinion they perfected, to something a little more grown up. and i love it. maybe someday they'll come back from their "indefinite hiatus." i know i cannot wait.
so now i'm going to share with you my three favorite videos. the first of which is always. this may well be one of my favorite music videos EVER.
second is i miss you:
and lastly adam's song. whenever this song came on at work (i used to work in a fro-yo shop) i would turn the volume up WAY PAST the maximum we were supposed to have it. i'm a bit of a rebel.
now i'm going to share my favorite tracks. three are from their last album and then one each from enema of the state and take off your pants and jacket:
i came across the most amazing thing ever: poetry meets music they're mash-ups (sorta) of, well, poetry with music. the poets reading their poetry set to the most amazing music. these are my favorite
one of the things i love the most about living in the bay area is the local music scene. one of my favorites is timothy rabbit who was voted by the readers of the daily californian as the best local musician in both 2006 and 2007. i did a pretty fun interview with him two years ago. i can't seem to find the link to it, but there is still a link up to the article that went with it.
so i share with you two songs from his it's always snowing . . . in iceland ep and two from the yet to be released swim, fish, swim.
"intro-inspection" by osymyso is maybe the most amazing thing i've ever heard. it's a 12 minute mash-up of everything under the sun. you can read all about it at wikipedia.
i just got les bains douches which is a live album by joy division, recorded on december 18th, 1979 at les bains douches, Paris (as well as a few other places in europe) on vinyl and it is pretty much amazing. i really need a time machine so i can go back and time and see joy division live.
i think r.e.m.'s automatic for the people is pretty much one of the most perfect albums ever. the more i listen to it the more i love it. and honestly, can anyone listen to "everybody hurts" and not think of the end of that episode of my so-called life? i think not.
i've been listening to all my beatles on vinyl. i inherited (stole) a lot of the older stuff from my parents and found rubber soul for $1 at a thrift store (score!), but i really need to get revolver and let it be! here's some of my favorite tracks that i don't often see talked about.
mp3s for sampling only--if you like it, please support the artist--visit their website, myspace, etc. if you are the owner of a sound file, and would like it removed, email me here.
